Dahlia seeds are easy to germinate and the plants are easy to grow. We are offering a selection of different types for sale, all are showy in the garden, some can be used in small pots and many are worth over wintering for years of enjoyment. The seeds are large and easy to handle.

There are around 30 species of Dahlia, native to Mexico and Central America, but only Dahlia pinnata and D. coccinea have been used to produce the many current cultivars. Some cultivars include a third species, Dahlia hortensis. There are thousands of varieties of Dahlia, which range in height from 12 inches to 8 feet. The flowers maybe as small as 2 inches or over a foot in diameter. Some have been breed as bedding plants, some as pot or container plants, and others have been breed for cut flowers. Some, with pruning and disbudding can be forced into producing a single gigantic bloom per plant.

Dahlias bloom best in full sun and are tolerant of most soils but perform best in soils that are sandy and well draining with a soil with a pH of 6.2- 6.5 . Heavy clay soils produce smaller and weaker plants. Dahlias are summer blooming plants that form tubers; they are typically hardy in USDA zones 7-11 but grown as annuals everywhere. Where hardy they can be left in the ground over winter and new plants will grow from the tubers in the spring. Where not hardy the tubers can be lifted in late fall and over wintered in a frost-free area inside and replanted in the spring.

Because of the many different flower and plants sizes, a classification system has been developed to group similar cultivars together, it includes 10 or more classes and each class is often divided into different sizes also. The ten major classifications are: Single-flowered, Anemone-flowered, Collarette, Waterlily or Nymphaea-flowered, Decorative, Ball, Cactus-flowered, Semi-cactus, and Miscellaneous.
