{Elfin Purple}(kal-a-MIN-tha: gran-di-FLO-ra) Lamiaceae:

Bright Rose/purple flowers on long spikes that grow about 12 inches tall. The flowers look somewhat like a miniature Penstemon. The genus name means 'Beautiful Mint' and the species name means 'grand' = large and 'flora' = flowers thus 'large flowering.' Long blooming period and blooms the first year. Very fragrant foliage. Grows best in well drained to dry soils in full sun to half day shade.

Zones (3) 5-9

Native to central Europe south to the Mediterranean and east to Central Asia and Russia. Surface sow the seeds and gently tamp down for good soil contact. First use 4 weeks at 70F, then 5 weeks at 32-39º, after move up to 53-60F for germination in about two weeks. Grow seedlings out cool (55-60F).
