Tickseed (kor-ee-OP-sis: gran-dih-FLOOR-ah) Asteraceae:
Coreopsis grandiflora 'Sunray' is a Fleuroselect Award Winner which produces bushy plants that are smothered with double to semi-double, yellow-gold flowers on stems that are 12 to 30 inches tall. Blooms the first year, and can be short-lived without regular division. Grow in full sun in well draining soils that are on the dry side. Nice cut flowers and seed eating birds love to eat the seeds after the plants are done blooming. Seeds are large enough for easy seeding and plants transplant well for nice displays the same year. Effective in clumps of five plants spaced about 10 inches apart. Regular dead heading and cutting for table arrangements will prolong the already long blooming period.
The species is native to North America. Surface sow the seeds, light needed for best germination. Once germination begins it is helpful to very thinly cover them with soil medium. Use 65F, with seed germination in 5-20 days. Transplant out after a few weeks of growth and water as the ground becomes dry until seedling establishment.
