(ken-TRAN-thus: RU-ber)

Centranthus means 'spurred flower' and of-coarse ‘ruber’ is red, while albiflorus means 'white flowering'. Plants grow two to three feet tall and produce many fragrant showy white flowers in phlox-like clusters. This species produces nice fragrant cut flowers. Plants will flower the first year if started early. The foliage is soft almost succulent looking and a light green color. Plants have large white many-branched rootstock and do best if left alone once established, resenting transplanting once established. Easy from seed, the seedlings have a good rate of growth and can be transplanted out after 4 to 6 weeks of growth.

Zones 4-9

From southern Europe and northern Africa. Germination 10 to 21 days at 65 F, light helps. Plants will flower 15 weeks from sowing.
