Rupturewort or Green Carpet Caryophyllaceae:
Herniaria glabra has bright green foliage and forms a creeping carpet up to two feet wide. Tolerant of poor soils and gravel. Forms a low growing ground cover about 3 inches tall, growing from a deep tap root with prostrate stems. Grow in full sun to half shade, excellent between flagstones, and often used as lawn substitute, or a ground cover. The small leaves turn bronze or red in winter. Tolerates foot traffic and usefule as an edging, groundcover or used in containers.
Direct sowing often has poor results. The seeds are small, so best results occur when started in pots and transplanting out the small plants into the landscape when large enough to handle. For capet like effect space out about 8 inches apart.
