Calico Beardtongue or Long-sepaled Penstemon or Smooth Beard-tongue (pen-STEH-mon cal-ee-COS-us) Scrophulariaceae:

Blooms May to June with flowers that are one inch long and a light violet or purple in color with three whitish lower lips (The picture shows an atypical near white flowering specimen). Plants grow 12 to 36 inches tall. This is a open woodland species found in the wild along the margins of woodland clearings and the edges of tree lines, thus doing best in part shade. Will take full sun as long as the soil does not become overly dry.

Native to rocky bluffs from Kentucky to Missouri, Alabama and Arkansas.
