Firecracker Penstemon or Eaton's Firecracker
Rich scarlet red flowers have a long tubular shape. The flowers cover the top 2/3rds of 1.5 to 2.5 foot (2.5 ft = 76.2 cm) tall stems. Blooming starts in mid to late spring. This species has a semi-woody base and the leaves are evergreen in warm locations. Grown best in rocky, well drained locations in sun. It is loved by hummingbirds and is dear resistant, drought tolerant, and suitable for use in hot and dry Climates. The flowering stems make nice cutting material.
Zones (4)8-10. Colder areas keep plants very dry over winter.
Some seeds of Penstemon eatonii should start to germination in less than two weeks at 60F (60F = 15.6 C). Surface sow seeds, light needed for best results., If the above does not work : use 40 to 45F (45F = 7.2 C), after a few weeks move to 55 to 65F (65F = 18.3 C), germination is spread out over many weeks.
