Description
Japanese Shield Fern or Autumn Fern
This evergreen to a semievergreen cultivar of Autumn Fern has brighter copper-red coloration when fronds first unfurl in the spring and again in the fall. Some direct sun will intensify the color.
Best growth in average, slightly acidic, medium to wet soils in part shade to full shade. Prefers soil that never dries out but is not wet, that is rich in organic matter. Soils should not dry out for best results. Plant where strong winds will not damage the fronds. Plants slowly spread over time by short creeping rhizomes.
The species is native to Japan, China, and Taiwan.
