(Dee-AN-thus pin-ee-FOH-lee-us) CARYOPHYLLACEAE:
Nice thick clumps, that form a dense mound of deep green needle or more grass like leaves with tight heads of deep crimson/purple-red (rose-red) flowers. Plants bloom from late spring to mid/late summer. A choice plant for the border or dry rock garden where it will generate much interest. Plants grow one foot tall and 6 inches wide. Dianthus pinifolius is native to Turkey. There are shorter forms possibly included too. Use in full sun to light shade on well-drained soils that are neutral to alkaline in pH. Plants grow about 6 to 8 inches tall and form a clump12 inches wide. With some only growing 2 inches tall and 4 inches wide.
In the north protect with dry winter mulch.
