Silene regia


Royal Catchfly Caryophyllaceae:

Silene regia has large, bright red flowers. Best grown in average, to dry soils that are well-draining in full sun to part shade. Prefers a sandy or gravelly soil, and looks nice on a rock wall. Excellent drainage required for the best results. A clump-forming perennial growing 3 to 4 feet tall with up-right stems of oppositely paired, entire leaves and enlarged nodes. The flowers are in Small clusters and have 5 petals in a rich scarlet red color. The 2 inch wide flowers are produced in summer. Best results is part shade in well draining soils.

Native to eastern USA, were it is found in rocky prairies, rocky open woods, thickets, borders of rocky glades and along roadsides.

Germination in 3-4 weeks at 65-75F. Surface sow seeds, light needed for best results. If no germination move for 2-4 weeks to 30-39F, then 65-75F.
